the difference it makes

When it comes to influencing people, there are a few factors that are necessary in order to make an impact. To name a few are communication, emotion/spirit/tone, and action; however, the baseline that covers all of these factors is human face-to-face interaction.
I personally prefer one-on-one conferences rather than doing things by myself online, through email, chat, or etc. Maybe it's because of my analytical personality and the need to be able to tell and read how the person is feeling or thinking when interacting with me, but I just feel a lot more convinced when I am face to face with a person rather than on the phone with them or something. In the same way, I would think that one on one counseling with the poor and disadvantaged would have a significantly greater impact on the people in so many different ways. For example, when a needy person is reassured that there is someone out there that cares, it gives them encouragement and hope that goes beyond any other form of help. Donations do not carry heart with them. They are simply a gifts with unknown intensions, motivation, situations at hand, and etc. To compare, a person who gives $20 as a donation to enter a carnival is not going to have the same genuine heart as when a person actually talks to or physically helps those in need.
One on one counseling, although it may not reach out or help as many people as money can, has the effect of spreading. When a disadvantaged person is encouraged or impacted by the physical help or attention of another, perhaps by human nature they'll seek out their friends and share this same enlightenment or encouragement. People, by nature, want to make their loved ones feel better. By sharing a bit of heart to someone of the poor and disadvantaged and giving them hope will maybe create a domino effect: the person who received encouragement will seek out to another when he or she is feeling down, and etc etc... Yes, it is important to have money to help build homes and provide needs to the poor and disadvantaged; however, it is only through human to human communication and contact that will most effectively change one's spirit. Humans have the capacity to do anything with the right mindset. Restoring hope and motivation to these people gives them power if they felt like that had none before.

  1. After all, we are social creatures who crave contact and connection, whatever the reasons.
