The (Insert Primary Donor Name Here) Ice Rink

I was talking to one of friends about the assignment this week. We were supposed to find something in our lives that could be done in a more efficient way. Unfortunately, most awesome ideas have already been made into reality. (For example, I was going to write about speakers that can only be heard in a specific area until this same friend told me about parabolic speakers in museums.) In addition, I can normally come up with many reasons why most other ideas are not plausible. Thus, I wasn't finding much to write about. But then my friend made a very relevant observation.

Let's be honest; Michigan is cold. Sure there are some months that could get up to 90 degrees, but college students aren't typically here during that time. So why do we have a football field that is rather useless most of the year inside the track on campus? Why don't we put in an ice rink instead? We have the lights, we have the space, and we certainly have the cold. Sure Michigan also gets random heat waves where the temperature shoots up to 50 degrees in mid January, but the rink melting wouldn't be that much of an issue. We're not trying to make money off it, just provide something fun for students and the community, weather permitting. And for those who really like the football field, I'm sure it (or the rink) could just as easily go somewhere else.

Obviously I don't think this should happen right now, but why not build an ice rink eventually? Sports that rely on cold weather seem perfectly suited for our area. Besides an ice rink would be fun in its own right. Who doesn't love slipping and sliding on ice while having a blast with friends? Don't we all do that every winter anyway?

  1. Multi-purposing public spaces...I think the University used to do that behind Lamson. Not sure why they stopped. Good idea, though.
