A Whack On The Side Of The Head (With A Stick Of Deodorant)

At first glance, this assignment seemed impossible. Finding something that's wrong with the way the world works is easy; describing a way to make it better--not so much. That's why my "whack on the side of the head" didn't come until Wednesday morning, but boy was it a fun whack.
I was slogging zombie-like through my morning routine (not yet having tasted the nectar of the gods that is coffee). I had showered and was putting on deodorant. As the deodorant container hovered near my armpit, the deodorant itself slipped from its container and fell to the floor. Mumbling incoherently, I bent to pick up the fallen, but intact, stick. That's when my magical epiphany came.
We humans go through what must be thousands of sticks of deodorant on a daily basis. We use the deodorant up, then we throw away the plastic container. More than 95% of Americans use deodorant on a daily basis. With more than 305,000,000 people living in the US, that's a lot of deodorant containers being used and thrown away.
So my epiphany was this: Why can't we make refillable deodorants? It would take much less material to make refill packages than it would to continue to make bulky, unreusable plastic containers. Manufacturers of deodorants could take a page from the sales department of reusable razors, making deodorant containers a little fancier or "more ergonomic" (rubber grip?) and selling the deodorant refills separately, in thin plastic or cardboard containers.
The main reason for this change in deodorant-manufacturing processes is simple: refill packages would take less plastic or cardboard than making deodorant holders does now. Your average deodorant holder has a plastic cap, a thick plastic body, and a plastic revolving bottom (to push the deodorant up or down). A refill package, while it would have to be thick enough to keep the deodorant from breaking into pieces in transit, would still take less material than continuing to make single-use deodorant containers.

  1. Now that's a good "whack!" Selling deodorant like razor blades is a GREAT idea!
