Attitudes on Service

Is is important to serve the poor directly? Most people are satisfied with donating and nothing more. I'm not saying that one shouldn't donate because donations are also important. What I am saying is that is is important to interact with the poor of the world-- the people of third world countries that cannot provide for themselves in different aspects. People around the world are lacking things that we take for granted everyday. Such as drinkable water, security, and opportunities. Should we as privileged humans reach out and help those that are unable to help themselves?

My answer to this question would be definitely yes. When a person actually goes into a poor area and sacrifices time and money for the people in that area is more valuable than simply donating. Just the companionship or the knowledge the someone cares is important for the people of these areas. Although most people think that helping the poor is limited to overseas countries, its not. From a Christian point of view, Jesus said to help reach out to the least of these--referring to anyone who needs help. Whether its a homeless person in the projects, or someone who's eating out of a trash can at a boardwalk. I find it fascinating that that many people are selfish and waste money on many things that they don;t need.

For example, while I was on a beach in California i was surprised to see homeless people and movies stars both residing a few feet away from each other. These poor people were living in tents on the beach and the movie stars were busy taking photo shoots.. I think what the poor people of toady need are not only the fulfillment of basic necessities, but also the embrace of a person who cares. In short, if the opportunity avails, we should reach out to those who are less fortunate than ourselves. For if God loved us sinners, should we not extend the love to others as well?
