Sachs Chap 1+2

Sachs was difficult reading for me and I can't say that I found his writing style the most engaging. I think he could have said what he wanted to say in considerably fewer pages, but I can understand that he wanted to make sure he got his point across. His arguments seemed well-thought out and it's obvious that he is passionate about what he is saying and has a genuine concern for the current economic and environmental situation. I certainly agree that the poverty in the world is something that should be dealt with and that we should make an effort to make our world a cleaner place. In fact, I agree with most of the things he believes need to be done, although the population reduction concerns me somewhat. I just can't see how it can really be done in a way that was voluntary, and the way he presents it somehow just makes me think of the attempts to reduce the population in China through laws that say how many children a family can have.
What I am not sure I like about Sachs' views are his suggested methods for accomplishing his goals. As we are all human beings I think that the idea we can all work together is nice, but unlikely. His emphasis on using laws and the government to solve the world's problems alarms me and his general way of thinking sounds too socialistic to me. I think socialism would be the right system to use in a perfect world, but in our own I think it leaves itself far too open to abuse. We can only all work together if we all want to work together, which, unfortunately, is just not the case with everyone.

  1. So how to we cause people to WANT to work together? How do we cause them to see it as in their own self-interest?
