social networking vs education

Social networking has both its pros and cons related to education. Some pros are that students are able to communicate with other students, and get help from their peers. Not only can they get in contact with their peers, but since even the older generations have started to use social networking, they are able to get a different perspective from the adults. Of course, for students who learn best when studying by themselves, social networking would have little to no benefit for them. However, most people learn faster when things are taught to them, and I think that social networking can give the opportunity for that.
A huge negative effect of social networking is that, let's face it, social networking can lead to a complete waste of time. Most students have very little time control and due to social networking, they procrastinate and procrastinate, which lowers their learning time and as a result, their education. Students like things that are interesting and fun, and compared to school and homework, social networking seems like the more fun choice. As a result, people spend minutes, hours, and even days just browsing through Facebook or Myspace, chatting to friends on AIM or MSN, and just socializing.
I think that if used correctly, social networking can be a very efficient tool in learning and expanding your education, but once you get too immersed into it, it's over. You're tangled in the web of social networking and it's extremely hard to get out.

  1. Thanks for recognizing that even us 'oldsters' can productively use social networking tools! And you're talking to a confirmed procrastinator here. But learning to focus and prioritize is tremendously important for success in life's endeavors. Social media doesn't change that but it does give you one more area to work on.
